Air Fryer

What size air fryer do I need? Why 7.3 litres is the sweet spot for a family

Posted by RADOCOReading time: 3 min

Air fryers are sold by litres, and litres are the least useful number on the box. Two 7-litre baskets can hold very different amounts of food depending on their shape, and a basket that is technically big enough can still force you into two batches if it is round. Here is how to choose.

The quick answer by household

HouseholdCapacityWhat fits in one batch
One person2–3.5 LA chicken breast and a handful of fries
Couple4–5 LTwo portions of most things; wings for two
Family of 3–45.5–6.5 LFour portions of fries, six drumsticks, a small chicken
Family of 4–6, or entertaining7–8 LA whole 1.5 kg chicken, 1 kg of fries, two trays of vegetables

Why shape beats volume

A round basket wastes the corners. Fries and nuggets do not mind, but a whole chicken, a tray of kofta or a fish fillet does. The RADOCO RD-1012W uses a square 7.3 L basket, which is why a 1.5 kg chicken goes in whole with room for the air to circulate, whereas some round 8 L baskets need the legs tucked and the bird wedged in.

Depth matters too. A shallow, wide basket cooks in a single layer — the way an air fryer is supposed to be used. Tall, narrow baskets encourage stacking, and stacked food steams instead of crisping.

"I'll just buy the biggest one"

Three things to check before you do:

  • Counter space. A 7.3 L unit is roughly 33 × 33 × 36 cm. Measure the gap under your wall cabinets — you need 10 cm of clearance above the unit for the exhaust.
  • Weight of the basket. A full 7 L basket of chicken is heavy. Look for a solid handle and a basket that slides rather than lifts.
  • Preheat time. Bigger cavities take a little longer. The RD-1012W's 1800 W element gets to 200 °C in about 3 minutes, which is quick for the size.

Dual-basket or single?

Dual-drawer models let you cook two things at different temperatures, which is genuinely useful — but each drawer is usually 3–4 L, so a whole chicken is out. If you mostly cook one main dish and a side, a large single basket plus the "shake" reminder does the job with less to clean.

The features that matter at this size

  • A window. With a big batch you want to see it without opening the drawer. The RD-1012W has a lit viewing window.
  • Presets. Twelve one-touch programmes cover fries, chicken, fish, shrimp, steak, pizza, bake and dehydrate.
  • App control. Start a delayed programme from the car so the chicken is ready when you walk in — the Wi-Fi app also holds 100+ recipes.
  • Dishwasher-safe basket. Non-negotiable at this capacity.

Our recommendation for most UAE households — where weekend lunches for extended family are the norm — is a 7 L-class square basket. For everyday cooking for two it will feel big, but you will never wish it were smaller when guests arrive. See the RD-1012W in detail.

Frequently asked questions

How many people does a 7.3 L air fryer feed?

Comfortably four to six. It holds a 1.4–1.6 kg whole chicken, about 1 kg of fries in one layer, or two trays of vegetables.

Is a bigger air fryer slower?

Slightly longer to preheat (about a minute more than a 4 L model), but it cooks the same amount of food in one batch instead of two, so total time is lower.

Does a big air fryer use more electricity for small portions?

Marginally. The heating element cycles off once the cavity is hot, so cooking two chicken breasts in a 7.3 L basket costs only a little more than in a 4 L basket.
